Kulturforståelse
This e-learning course in Cultural Understanding provides a stimulating environment for students to develop a topic for a theme project. A compendium of readings for this course has been prepared and is available for copying.
So, what is this phenomenon called globalisation? How does it affect our everyday lives? In what ways do we approach and represent ‘the global’? What does having a chat or reading a book over a cup of coffee in Starbucks, Pret-a-Manger or Cafe Revive have to do with trashing or saving the planet?
Does promoting the use of English in a tourism project cause the death of twenty languages in a remote area of Papua New Guinea? Is CyberEnglish the new lingua franca of the world?
How ‘democratic’ in shape are the ‘new’ forms of globalisation? What are the economic and cultural effects of globalisation – travelling across borders? Can we have fair trade (and sustainability of) in relation to globalisation?
These are some of the questions that this e-learning course in Cultural Understanding entertains – in English and Danish. We will explore the use of a variety of approaches to globalisation and the aspect of culture and cultural understanding, and then to analyse both the ideologies and practices that connect globalisation and cultural understanding in an age of planetary globalisation.
During the e-learning course in Cultural Understanding, examples from our daily lives – e.g., the drawings of the Prophet Mohammed in the Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllandsposten – will also be applied to fully grasp the overall perspective of cultural understanding. See file here for inspiration avisside-muhammed.pdf.
Additionally, during this e-learning course in Cultural Understanding we discuss the methodological issues involved in an investigation of the discourses of globalisation and cultural understanding.
PowerPoint slides are available from this side prior to each session. You can use them as notes.
